166 "Our Kin" identified his parent as Philip Jakob Rudisill, which has caused a lot of misunderstanding, particularly in the South, where Miles Hoffman's book has been considered the primary authority for the Lincoln County, North Carolina pioneer families, and the first to write extensively about the Rudisill clan. Hoffman relied primarily on oral history from family members during the early 1900's, and it is easy to be confused with the repetitive given names and the blur of a century's memories. In this case, family researchers trying to verify Hoffman's work discovered some discontinuities in the data and a close study of land records has been done to verify that this Philip was the son of Jonas and Elizabeth Moul Rudisill of York Co, Pa. (See pages 195, 196 and "Carpenters A'Plenty", page 1044, for a detailed discussion.) Rudisill, Philip II (I788)

167 "Our Kin" traced the wrong John. Rudisill, John David (I5417)

172

The earliest ancestor which can be proven at this time is William Waldie and his wife Marjorie Gillespie. The Waldie family came from Carriden Parish, West Lothian Shire, Scotland. Carriden is about one mile wide from north to south and two miles in length from east to west and lies 18 miles west of Edinburgh, Scotland. In the 18th century it had a population of 1500 people, in four villages Grange Pens, Bridgenefs, Ben Hardpens and Bracknefs. About 150 people were seeders, but the principal industry was in the coal and salt mines. The Waldie family were colliers involved in the digging of the coal or sailors involved in the transporting of the coal. Until 1799 coal miners were tied in form of serfdom to the mine owners and could not readily change from one job to another or to change location. Although the wages were higher than working on the surface, it was a hard life involving the whole family in back breaking dangerous work. While the men and older boys worked the face of the coal seam, the mother and children hauled the coal to the surface. Children started to work in the mines at age 9 and had no opportunity for schooling.

In tracing Scottish Genealogy, it is helpful to know the Scottish system used in naming children:

The first male child named after the paternal grandfather, the second make child after the maternal grandfather and the third male child after the father.

The first female child was named after the maternal grandmother, the second female child after the paternal grandmother and the third female child after the mother.

The Waldie family followed this system with only a few exceptions. It was also common when a child died young, the next child born carried the same name. The name Waldie appears early in Scottish history deriving from the same Wald Eve. In Scotland the records all show the name Waldie. In the United States some records show the name is sometimes Waldy, it appears this way on Walter Waldy
Waldie, William (I3687)

The area from which the defendant is said to have resided is often simply the parish in which the offence was committed. Likewise the occupation of the defendant is usually expressed in general terms and is generally described as 'labourer'.

It is of course possible that William did reside in the parish of St. Clement Danes. This area formed part of Westminster and as such records are not held by this office and you will need to contact the City of Westminster and as such records are not held by this office and you will need to contact the City of Westminster Archives, 10 St. Ann's Street, London SW1P 2XR. A search has been made in the International Genealogical Index (IGI) under the name Crewdson and it would appear that a likely entry for William has been found. The entry records that a William Crewdson, son of John and Mary Crewdson, was baptised at St. Martin in the Fields church, Westminster on 11 November 1716 and you will need to contact Westminster Archives to obtain details of the baptism certificate. As the indictment gives no indication of William's family, however, it is not possible to confirm whether or not this baptism from the IGI is the baptism of the William Crewdson you are searching for.

In addition to the sessions roll, the Gaol Delivery Book for 1736 (ref MJ/GBB/315/27) has also been consulted. This confirms the above sentence and also contains a copy of the order and bond concerning his transportation. According to the entry the contractors were Jonathan and James Forward, merchants of London and William Loney, a mariner from Rotherhithe. A search was made through the series of transportation papers held by the office (ref MJ/SPT) but I regret that none survive for the period you are interested in.

I hope this information is useful.

Yours sincerely

signature

Geoff Pick
Manager - Reader Services Division Crewdson, William (I7849)

184 1 NOTE NC troops 1861-1865, Co. F. 55th Reg. NC troops p. 490

HOYLE, JOEL, Private

Born in Burke County and resided in Cleveland County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Cleveland County at age 22, April 19, 1862, for the war. Mustered in as Corporal. Reported absent on sick furlough in June 1862. Reported on duty as a teamster in September 1862. Reduced to ranks in September- October 1862. Rejoined the company on an unspecified date. Captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1,1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, July 6, 1863.Transferred to hospital at Chester, Pennsylvania, August 10,1863.

Transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, October 4, 1863. Released at Point Lookout on January 29, 1864, after taking the Oath of Allegiance and joining the US Army. Assigned to Company C 1st Regiment US Volunteer Infantry.

In 1867 Cleveland County Estates Records, it shows that regarding the Jesse Cook estate that Alex Kennedy and Joel Hoyle were security for the settling of this estate. They granted $200 to Rosanna Cook for her 2 year provision.: found this at the NC Archives in April, will see if I can copy this item in September.

Hoyle, Joel (I7313)

185 1 NOTE There is a lot of confusion over the name of this man. All the death certificates for the children and Jane show David as his name. The Hoyl book and the Downs book both list him asDaniel. The CSA Troops list him as Daniel. I believe he was buried beside Jane and the family at St. Paul in a grave with a soapstone marker, no writing, but I am not sure. There is only one unmarked stone in this area, could be Priscilla or Daniel.

Widow's Application for Pension dated June 26, 1901. Jane was living at Knob Creek at the time. She states that Daniel served in "B" 49th Reg of NC troops, and signed up May 14,1861. She was 68 years old at the time. Her application was denied.

NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS: 1861-1865 page 539

1st Co. D, 15th Regiment NC troops:

HOYLE, DANIEL A., private

Resided in Cleveland County where he enlisted at age 25, May 14,1861. April 1862 absent sick in Petersburg and NC. Sent to General Hospital at Richmond VA on December 30, 1862 and admitted on December 31,1862. When in Garysburg, NC he had been enlisted 1 year.. He was returned to duty Jan 8, 1863 from Chimbarazo

#3 Hospital in Richmond NC. He was again admitted on Jan 17 1863 with Volsedofs Gangrene or (Feubrns). Present or accounted for until reported absent without leave on October 22,1862. Reported absent without leave through,

December 1862............................" ( I asked the NC archives to copy

pages 539, and 540, but they by mistake copied page 538 and 539. I will get page 540 when I go back, so that I can finish this one.)

NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS: 1861-1865 page 50

Co. B 49th Regiment NC troops:

HOYLE, DANIEL A., CORPORAL

Previously served as Private in 1st Company D. 15th Regiment NC Troops (5th Regiment NC Volunteers). Transferred to this company on January 9, 1863, while reported absent without leave. Mustered in as Private. Reported for duty prior to March 1, 1863. Reported present in March-December, 1863, and May-June 1864.

Wounded at Globe Tavern, Virginia, August 21,1864. Returned to duty prior to August 31, 1864. Promoted to Corporal subsequent to August 31, 1864. Captured at Five Forks,Virginia, April 1, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland,April 5, 1865. Released at Point Lookout on June 27, 1865,after taking the Oath of Allegiance."

I wonder if the A in Daniel's name stands for Alexander, since they named Julius, Julius Alexander Hoyle. Could also have been Asbury, since they named Jacob, Asbury as a middle name.

There is a Daniel Hoyle buried in the Hoyle Wortman Cemetery near Loy Parker's.

He served in Co D 71 NC Inf. CSA. This is a different regiment, but notice who is buried beside him, none other than my Daniel's brother, Levi. with the regiment corresponding to what I have recorded in my file. I am attempting to find this cemetery so I can go check for myself. If this indeed is Daniel's grave then the unmarked stone besideJane's at sT. Paul must be Priscilla's.
